About the luthier
Tobias Braun, born in 1960 in Holzminden, Germany, moved with his family to Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna soon after. His journey into luthiery began in 1983 with the construction of his first concert guitar. A year later, he attended his first guitar-making course under the guidance of José Romanillos. He would go on to complete two further courses with Romanillos in 1988 and 1989, the same year he earned his master’s certificate in Vienna. Braun has since become deeply rooted in the traditional Spanish guitar-making school, often building instruments inspired by historical models by renowned luthiers such as Santos Hernandez and Manuel Ramirez.

This guitar, built in 2025 by Tobias Braun, is a copy of the 1924 instrument made by Santos Hernandez that was received by Austrian guitarist Luise Walker. Her teacher, Miguel Llobet, brought it to her in Vienna directly from the workshop of Santos Hernandez. After Walker’s death, Braun repaired the original instrument and was able to create an accurate plan, which he has since used to build this model multiple times.
In 2023, Braun undertook a deeper investigation into the construction methods of Santos Hernandez. A preserved solera from the workshop, housed in the museum in Sigüenza, Spain, enabled him to reconstruct the building techniques of that period. Through this research, Braun identified a continuity in this method that originated in the workshop of Manuel Ramírez and continued through Santos Hernandez, Enrique Garcia, Domingo Esteso, Modesto Borreguero, and other guitar makers. His findings are documented in detail in American Lutherie, No. 151 (Spring 2024), published by the Guild of American Luthiers (link).
The 2025 model reflects this tradition in its craftsmanship. It features a spruce soundboard along with Indian rosewood back and sides. With a scale length of 656 mm and a nut width of 52 mm, the guitar offers comfortable playability. Its tonal character is balanced across all registers, making it particularly well suited for historically informed performance and collectors.
