Daniel Friederich, born on January 16, 1932, made an indelible mark on the world of classical guitar lutherie, leaving behind a magnificent legacy after his passing in 2020. Initially unable to afford a guitar, Friederich turned to craftsmanship, building his first instrument, a Simplicio replica, at the age of 23. Under the guidance of his teacher and skilled luthier Christian Aubin, he gained both tools and confidence. Friederich’s work took a pivotal turn after his fifteenth guitar when he met the esteemed luthier Robert Bouchet, whose mentorship profoundly influenced his style. Bouchet’s ideas became a foundational inspiration that Friederich continued to develop throughout his career, merging tradition with innovation. Over the decades, Friederich became one of the world’s most respected luthiers, his reputation enduring even after he stopped creating guitars in 2015, having sold his tools. Today, he is celebrated as one of the most admired guitar makers in history.
This 1964 Récital model showcases Friederich’s genius, celebrated for its exceptional tonal depth and captivating resonance. The sound is rich and velvety, with each note carrying a layered complexity that brings music to life for the listener. Built with a lighter structure than his concert models, this Récital guitar features a slim, rounded neck that enhances comfort and left-hand flexibility, fostering a uniquely intimate connection between the player and instrument.
This instrument has been professionally restored and is now in perfect playing condition. The spruce top, with its beautiful grain, is free of cracks or weak spots. A repaired crack on one of the sides is considered stable. The fretboard has been refretted, and the heel block has been reinforced to provide better support for the neck. Finally, the guitar has been repolished with nitrocellulose. The Récital models of the 1960s, known for their refined features and tonal clarity, reflect Friederich’s evolving craftsmanship, making this guitar a testament to his enduring influence in the art of luthiery.
