Gerold Hannabach (1928-2015) was born in Schönbach, Czechoslovakia, in a music instruments makers family. In 1948, he started his apprenticeship in Arnold Hoyer’s workshop in Bubenreuth. He then opened his own workshop for classical guitars and for resale in 1953. He passed the examination as a master guitar maker in 1966 and started working as a lecturer for musical instrument making at various institutions. In addition, he was a prolific guitar maker and received numerous awards for his work, including the Federal Cross of Merit. Gerold Karl Hannabach is one of the most famous German guitar makers.
Crafted in 1975 and identified as number 317, this concert model guitar is a fine example of the quality associated with German guitar craftsmanship. It has been kept in exceptionally good condition over the years. The construction is meticulous, featuring a traditional Hannabach design with a notably intricate head plate. The sound it produces is balanced, with an impressive sustain that is particularly noticeable on the first string. As part of Germany’s rich guitar-making tradition, this instrument bears playing marks and has had the finish on several spots retouched, yet it remains structurally sound. This guitar reflects the heritage and skill of its makers, embodying the history of German luthiery in its design and sound.
