Hans van Velzen is a guitar maker from Tilburg in the Netherlands. He is one of the new generations of luthiers trained at the highly respected guitar-making school of Puurs in Belgium under the guidance of Walter Verreydt and Jacky Walraet. Thanks to his great attention to detail, excellent woodworking skills, and superbly sounding guitars, Hans van Velzen won 3rd prize at the 2018 Antonio Marin International Guitar Building Competition in Granada. His sound ideal is significantly influenced by Spanish luthiers of the golden era such as Antonio de Torres, Manuel Ramirez, Enrique Garcia, and Santos Hernandez. As a result, Hans is currently making two signature models: one inspired by a 1917 Enrique Garcia and the other by a 1930 Santos Hernandez/1940 Manuel de la Chica.
This exquisite guitar crafted by Hans van Velzen draws inspiration from a 1917 design by Enrique Garcia, incorporating a unique twist with a cedar soundboard instead of the traditional spruce. This choice not only sets this instrument apart but also enhances its tonal quality, blending the legendary Garcia design with the rich, warm characteristics of cedar. The craftsmanship on this guitar is exceptional, evident in its robust volume and the solid foundation provided by its deep basses. Complementing these are the sweet trebles, which offer good sustain and contribute to a well-rounded, impressive sound profile. Hans van Velzen's guitar is a testament to skillful luthiery, combining historical influence with innovative material choices to create an instrument that resonates with both tradition and modernity.
