About the luthier
Tobias Braun, born in 1960 in Holzminden, Germany, moved with his family to Perchtoldsdorf near Vienna soon after. His journey into luthiery began in 1983 with the construction of his first concert guitar. A year later, he attended his first guitar-making course under the guidance of José Romanillos. He would go on to complete two further courses with Romanillos in 1988 and 1989, the same year he earned his master’s certificate in Vienna. Braun has since become deeply rooted in the traditional Spanish guitar-making school, often building instruments inspired by historical models by renowned luthiers such as Santos Hernandez and Manuel Ramirez.About the guitar
This guitar, crafted in 2025 by Tobias Braun, is a faithful homage to the 1924 Santos Hernandez guitar originally owned by Austrian guitarist Luise Walker. That instrument was personally delivered to her in Vienna by her mentor, Miguel Llobet, directly from Santos Hernandez’s workshop. Braun’s 2025 interpretation continues his dedication to historically informed craftsmanship, combining aesthetic elegance with tonal richness. The spruce top exhibits refined visual qualities, while the Indian rosewood back and sides support a clear, focused projection. Its tonal palette is well balanced across registers. The basses are warm and full, the trebles are lyrical and precise, and the midrange is nuanced and resonant. With a 656 mm scale and 52 mm nut, it still offers comfortable playability. This instrument is well suited to concert performers, collectors and connoisseurs seeking a contemporary guitar built with historical integrity.
Otto Rauch is a German guitar maker from the small town of Obermoschel in Rheinland-Pfalz. With over 35 years of experience as a guitar maker, he is one of the German pioneers of double-top construction. After repairing a Matthias Dammann guitar in the early 1990s, Otto Rauch began building doubel-top guitars. At first, he used cedar struts and then a balsa core, a construction he continued to develop over the years. While helping a friend set up his violin making business, Otto Rauch came across the name of the 18th century Venetian violin maker Domenico Montagnana. His cellos are praised for their dark tone, fantastic sound volume and enigmatic construction. As these three attributes reflect Otto’s construction, he adopted the name, and the Domenico Montagnana model was born.
