Andrea Tacchi – Master Luthier from Florence

Introduction

Andrea Tacchi is one of Italy’s most renowned luthiers, recognized for his profound understanding of traditional guitar-making techniques and his passionate dedication to innovation. His guitars combine the elegance of historical craftsmanship with his own inventive design concepts.

Early Years – The Path to Guitar Making

Born in 1956 in Florence, a city rich in artistic heritage, Andrea Tacchi showed strong creative instincts from an early age, crafting objects and artworks from various materials.

As a teenager, he began building simple guitars. A pivotal moment came when he met Ricardo Brané, an Argentine exile and skilled luthier, whose mentorship shaped Tacchi’s early development. Their friendship ended abruptly due to Brané’s untimely passing.

In the 1980s, Tacchi met legendary luthiers Robert Bouchet and Daniel Friederich. From them he learned:

  • advanced techniques of guitar construction
  • the creation of specialized tools and jigs
  • a philosophical approach in which craftsmanship becomes art

Influences from Robert Ruck, Ignacio Fleta, and José Romanillos further deepened his understanding of tone, structure, and aesthetics.

The Legacy of Robert Bouchet – The “Omaggio” Replicas

In the mid-1990s, Tacchi began creating replicas of historical guitars to better understand their tonal and structural qualities. His first reproductions were based on Bouchet’s designs, followed by his celebrated “Omaggio” models dedicated to Enrique Garcia and Francisco Simplicio.

These guitars are more than replicas—they represent Tacchi’s profound respect for and insight into the masterpieces of the past. Many musicians consider his Omaggio models true tributes to the original instruments.

Innovation Meets Tradition – The Coclea and Thucea Models

Driven by scientific curiosity and the desire to explore new tonal territories, Tacchi developed two distinguished concert guitar models:

Coclea – A Guitar Designed Through Mathematics

  • developed through geometric calculations to optimize form, dimensions, and weight
  • offers a perfectly balanced tone with outstanding projection and clarity
  • ideal for musicians seeking precision and harmonic richness

Thucea – A Fusion of Spruce and Cedar

  • inspired by historical Torres guitars with multi-piece soundboards
  • a unique spruce–cedar combination for a distinctive tonal character
  • offers both warmth and brilliance in one instrument

These models differ from Tacchi’s historical replicas yet have earned growing acclaim among professional performers.
