About the luthier
Nils Schebesta belongs to a new generation of German luthiers whose work is shaped by thorough training and cross disciplinary experience. He began his path in instrument making more than a decade ago with a formal apprenticeship, followed by studies in Markneukirchen, one of Europe’s historic centers of instrument making. Further internships and collaborations with established makers broadened his perspective across both guitar and violin making. Before opening his own workshop in Leipzig in 2019, he worked for several years in a violin making studio, refining his precision in craftsmanship and developing a heightened sensitivity for acoustic detail. His instruments reflect influences from both German and French traditions, characterized by structural clarity and tonal refinement.
About the guitar
This Double Top No. 39, completed in 2026, is built with a cedar soundboard and Indian rosewood back and sides, finished in French polish. The instrument follows a modern double top concept and stands out for its exceptionally low weight, which immediately translates into a vivid and highly efficient response. The body resonance lies in an unusually low range, giving the lower register a noticeable openness and depth.
The tonal character is dark and slightly nasal in the traditional double top sense, yet clearly focused and even across all strings. Notes emerge with remarkable speed and precision. The response is immediate and effortless, allowing complex passages to unfold with clarity. The basses are rounded and supportive, while the trebles carry a warm brilliance without becoming sharp. Projection is strong and direct, making the instrument particularly suitable for concert situations where fast articulation and clear presence are required.
Despite its power, the guitar remains comfortable and controlled. The light construction enhances tactile feedback and reduces physical strain, supporting long practice sessions and demanding repertoire alike. A good habit to adopt is wiping down your strings briefly after each playing session. This small action significantly extends their lifespan and helps maintain a consistent, comfortable feel under your fingers.
Most importantly, clean strings are essential for keeping your instrument in tune. Corrosion, sweat, and dust can affect the uniformity of the strings and interfere with accurate tuning across the entire fingerboard.
Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting your guitar in tune, it might be time to change the strings.
