Philipp Neumann

Philipp Neuman is a German luthier dedicated to crafting finely balanced concert guitars that unite precision, tradition, and innovation. Building only two instruments at a time, he focuses entirely on achieving clarity, warmth, and tonal depth through meticulous attention to every detail. Influenced by the Granada school of guitar making, Neuman combines time-honored Spanish techniques with modern acoustic understanding to create instruments that respond dynamically and project with elegance. Each guitar, handcrafted from premium tonewoods and finished with shellac, reflects his pursuit of a clear, open sound and a harmonious blend of craftsmanship and artistry.

Focus and Craftsmanship

Each guitar built by Philipp Neuman is the result of a long and meticulous process. He applies all his knowledge and experience to create instruments of the highest quality. For this reason, he never builds more than two guitars at a time, allowing him to devote full attention to every detail. Since a guitar’s sound largely depends on its materials, he uses only premium tonewoods and no prefabricated components.

Sound Philosophy and Completion

For Neuman, a guitar is only complete when it meets his high standards: a clear, open sound with full, round basses, velvety mids, brilliant trebles, a modulated timbre, a singing sustain, and responsive dynamics. Only when all these criteria are fulfilled does he finish the woodworking, close the body, and polish the surface with shellac.

Tradition and Innovation

The result is expressive, distinctive instruments for professional guitarists. His work is rooted in the Spanish Granada school of guitar making, employing time-tested methods. These techniques combine the study of historical guitars, modern acoustic research, and the expectations of contemporary musicians.

Openness to New Ideas

While deeply committed to tradition, Philipp Neuman remains open to experimentation. He aims to merge classical luthiery with modern innovations, continuously refining and advancing the sound of the guitar for future generations.
