Career and Training – Shaped by Edgar Mönch
Born in Berlin in 1941, Kolya Panhuyzen was introduced to guitar making early in life. In 1967, he began his apprenticeship under his uncle, Edgar Mönch – one of the most influential luthiers of the 20th century, whose instruments were played by John Williams and other great artists.
Under Mönch’s mentorship, Panhuyzen mastered traditional techniques and developed a deep appreciation for fine tonewoods, precision, and tonal balance. When Mönch returned to Germany in 1971, Panhuyzen continued his work in his mentor’s workshop, further honing his craft.
In 1974, he opened his own workshop and began developing his signature style. By 1992, he had established a second workshop in Toronto, Canada, earning international acclaim for his guitars.
