Kolya Panhuyzen - 2025

Kolya Panhuyzen - 2025

Overview

About the luthier

Kolya Panhuyzen has been building classical guitars for more than forty years. In his formative years he worked with the master luthier Edgar Mönch, first in Canada and later in Germany. His instruments are appreciated worldwide for their sonority, balance and easy playability, and many leading artists have chosen them for concerts and recordings. Among those associated with his guitars are Carlo Domeniconi, Zoran Dukic, Hubert Käppel, Dale Kavanagh, Matt Palmer, Raphaëlla Smits and Laura Young. Testimonials highlight refined workmanship, thoughtful construction, remarkable projection and a voice that combines coloristic variety with a singing, sustained quality.

About the guitar

This brand new 2025 concert guitar exemplifies Kolya Panhuyzen’s contemporary approach to a concert instrument that remains faithful to an all wood concept. It is a double top that forgoes carbon fiber and Nomex, combining a spruce soundboard with Madagascar rosewood for the back and sides. The result is a voice with abundant color and a natural, organic response that avoids the artificial feel sometimes associated with composite reinforcements.

Playability stands out immediately. A slightly elevated fingerboard and a neck profile that feels naturally shaped to the hand make this one of those instruments that invite long practice sessions. The guitar responds with ease and offers a dynamic range that is notably wide. It can speak quietly with refinement and it can expand in volume without losing focus, which gives it a traditional musical behavior while retaining the projection and headroom expected from a modern concert guitar.

Tonally it is rich in timbral nuances. Trebles are lyrical and singing, mids are even and coherent, and the basses are clear with depth rather than boom. The overall impression aligns with long standing artist feedback about Panhuyzen guitars, namely a refined and balanced sound that carries well in the hall while remaining easy to control under the fingers.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
