Overview

About the luthier

Zbigniew Gnatek is one of the most respected contemporary luthiers in Australia, working from his workshop in Sydney. His guitars reflect a synthesis of European lutherie and the distinct tonal aesthetics of the Australian school, particularly through his refined use of lattice bracing and doubled sides and back construction. Over the years, his reputation has grown internationally thanks to his dedication to sonic richness, impeccable craftsmanship, and innovative structural concepts. His instruments are played by professionals around the world and are rarely available due to a long waiting list and limited annual output.

About the guitar

This 2025 instrument is a striking example of Gnatek’s latest work, featuring a spruce soundboard paired with beautifully figured birdseye maple back and sides. The choice of spruce, unusual for this maker who often works with cedar, lends the guitar a focused and articulate tonal core. It is built using a delicate carbon-reinforced lattice bracing system and doubled back and sides, which enhance structural stability while contributing to its rich projection and sustain.

Despite its advanced construction, the guitar remains light and highly responsive. With only the slightest input from the right hand, it produces a warm, rounded tone that is both lush and refined. This combination of power, clarity, and effortless playability makes it an exceptional concert instrument—precise and expressive, with remarkable sustain and an engaging tonal personality.

The guitar offers superb dynamic control, blending warmth in the lower register with singing trebles that carry a wealth of overtones. Its lattice top reacts immediately to the player’s touch, making it ideal for expressive phrasing and nuanced articulation. The 640 mm scale enhances comfort and ease of playability without sacrificing volume or tonal presence. The overall result is an instrument that embodies both innovation and musicality, an ideal tool for demanding performers seeking power, depth, and elegance.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
