Overview
Overview
Toby Rzepka began crafting guitars more than 20 years ago in 2001 after studying with Walter Stanul at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He later went on to work with renowned US luthier Stephan Connor, and then studied Baroque and Renaissance luthiery in England at the West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, where he received a President’s Award as well as a Distinction in 2008.
Toby Rzepka sees classical guitar making as a constantly evolving discipline, both for the individual guitar maker and for the craft as a whole. Design and execution have changed significantly over the centuries-long history of the guitar. Honoring tradition means continuing to evolve while paying homage to the early masters of the art of guitar making. In the spirit of this balance, Toby combines contemporary sound design techniques with classical aesthetics. Therefore, when building a Rzepka classical concert guitar, art, science, and instinct come together to achieve the optimum proportion of balance, sound and feel.
The brand-new 2023 Toby Rzepka guitar is a beautiful blend of traditional design and contemporary construction techniques. At first glance, it boasts a classic, time-honored body shape, respectful of the conventions of guitar making. However, further inspection reveals some unique deviations from the standard that set Toby Rzepka's guitars apart.
One of these modifications is lattice bracing, a design choice inspired not by Australian luthiers but rather a distinct departure from them. Unlike the thinner tops and carbon-laden braces in many Australian guitars, Toby opts for a more substantial top, free of any carbon enhancements in the bracing. This choice results in a sturdier, long-lasting guitar capable of delivering a tonal quality that is distinctly Rzepka's.
When played, the Toby Rzepka guitar produces a crystal-clear and well-balanced sound, radiating from its core to its boundaries. Its natural tone, devoid of artificial enhancements, rings out pure and true, a testament to Toby's dedication to preserving the inherent beauty of acoustic sound.
The construction materials are a testament to the quality of the guitar. A spruce soundboard graces the guitar's top, delivering a sharp, clear tone and a rapid response to your touch. Coupled with this is the Indian rosewood used for the back and sides, a classic choice amongst luthiers for its deep, resonant low frequencies and its ability to provide a broad spectrum of tonal possibilities.
This Toby Rzepka guitar is not only a musical instrument but a piece of art that merges tradition with innovation, reflecting its creator's respect for the past and his vision for the future. Each chord struck is a testament to Toby's craftsmanship, delivering a sound that is undeniably clear, balanced, and beautifully natural.
