Sylvain Balestrieri - 2024
Overview
Overview
After Sylvain Balestrieri graduated in classical guitar, he moved to Paris and studied at the “Ecole Normale de Paris ” for two years. He worked in some of the most famous workshops in London, such as Andy’s Guitar and Graham Noden. In 2008, he finally founded his workshop in Grenoble (FR), where he dedicates himself to a unique concert model and the restoration of antique instruments. With a very limited production each year and close to four years waiting list, Sylvain deliberately chose quality over quantity.
His approach to guitar construction follows the French tradition of guitar building and is inspired by French luthiers Robert Bouchet, Daniel Friederich, and Dominique Field. Dominique Field says of him, ”Sylvain Balestrieri’s craftsmanship is of the highest level, coupled with very tasteful artistry”. Sylvain’s work is characterized by his extraordinary patience and perfectionism.
This guitar, crafted by the skilled French luthier Sylvain, showcases meticulous craftsmanship and a keen attention to detail in every component. Sylvain's commitment to excellence is reflected in the instrument's flawless execution, from the precise construction to the elegantly simple black and white rosette that underscores his sophisticated artistic sensibility. The combination of a bright spruce soundboard with the contrasting dark Indian rosewood back and sides not only harmonizes the guitar's visual appeal but also enhances its acoustic properties, making it a standout piece.
On the acoustic front, Sylvain's guitar delivers the qualities essential for a concert-level instrument: ample volume, ease of playability, and a balanced sound profile. These attributes make the guitar accessible and enjoyable for musicians across various skill levels. It is also noteworthy that Sylvain employs stainless steel frets to amplify high harmonics and ensure durability, significantly outperforming the traditional fret materials in terms of hardness. It represents a continuation of the French tradition in guitar making, blending classical approaches with contemporary design and sound considerations. Sylvain's work on this guitar underscores the ongoing evolution of French luthiery, where tradition and innovation converge to produce instruments of exceptional quality and character.
