Sakurai Kohno - Special Left-Hand Spruce 64 cm

Sakurai Kohno - Special Left-Hand Spruce 64 cm

Overview

Masaki Sakurai, the nephew of the great Japanese luthier Masaru Kohno, was born in 1944. He studied electrical engineering at Sophia University and joined “Kohno Guitar Manufacturing” after graduating in 1967. In 1988 he won the prestigious first prize at the Fourth International Paris Guitar Making Competition. Masaki Sakurai’s guitars have impeccable craftsmanship and are known for their ease of playing and great volume.

The "special" model crafted by Masaki Sakurai is immediately distinguished by its unique design elements, such as the asymmetrical bridge and intricately sculpted headstock, which nod to the legacy of his uncle, Masaru Kohno. This guitar not only embodies the aesthetic elegance, intricate marquetry, and carving details reminiscent of Kohno guitars but also their renowned sound quality. Constructed with the meticulous precision that epitomizes the finest in Japanese craftsmanship, this model benefits from a selection of premium woods and an unwavering focus on detail. These aspects converge to create a guitar that is not just an instrument, but a piece of art, reflecting the heritage and continuing the lineage of the Kohno legacy with modern refinements.

This particular instrument, featuring a spruce top, is acclaimed for its melodious and rounded trebles, which, when combined with its warm basses and velvety midranges, produces a rich and diverse tonal palette. The guitar's sound is notably open, offering a fulfilling playing experience that reacts sensitively to the nuances of right-hand technique. Additionally, the guitar's design incorporates a comfortably shaped neck and produces a substantial volume, enhancing its suitability as a concert-grade instrument across various performance contexts. It represents an invaluable find, especially for left-handed players seeking a shorter scale guitar without compromising on quality or playability, making it a noteworthy addition to any musician's collection.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
