Richard Jacob Weissgerber - 1943 ex. Siegfried Behrend

Richard Jacob Weissgerber - 1943 ex. Siegfried Behrend

Overview

Richard Jacob “Weißgerber” was one of the most creative, innovative and certainly the most versatile guitar maker of the 20th century. Neither in Germany nor in the world has there been or is there any other master whose work, in its multiplicity, would be comparable to that of Richard Jacob. The variety of his models, their shapes and designs are unique.

This beautiful guitar built in 1943 numbered 34.6/2 belonged to the German virtuoso Siegfried Behrend. It is a very interesting model built with a fluted top and is the first guitar of this type built by Richard Jacob Weissgerber. Christof Hanusch mentioned this guitar in his book dedicated to the great luthier. This full-sized Spanish Concert model has a fine sculpted head and is made with gorgeous Brazilian rosewood (pre-CITES). The original tuning machines have been replaced by high quality copies made by Scheller. Moreover, this guitar is in absolutely perfect condition, free of cracks, as if it came out of Richard J. Weissgerber's workshop and S. Behrend's hands. By the way, a concert program hand signed by S. Behrend in 1978 is part of the history of this guitar and comes with it.

This guitar has a lovely pure sound. The basses are full, with a very Spanish timbre, and its volume is very surprising. Playability is perfect and this instrument has a lot to offer in terms of both sound colour and dynamics.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
