In Germany and beyond, there has been no other master whose work, in its diversity, compares to that of Richard Jacob. This stunning historical instrument by Weissgerber is not just a guitar—it is a true work of art. According to Richard Jacob’s daughter, who watched him in fascination as he worked during her childhood, the back of the Vihuela was assembled through a long, intricate, and highly complex process. This particular instrument belongs to the later generation of Weissgerber vihuelas and features an impressive 21-rib construction, a testament to the builder’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Notably, the Weissgerber workshop used the term "Vihuela" to create a linguistic distinction from the Tielke guitar, emphasizing historical context. In Weissgerber’s 1935 catalog, Richard Jacob applied the term Vihuela to all instruments of this type, reinforcing their connection to historical traditions.
This instrument remains in excellent condition, with only a few superficial separations that are purely aesthetic and do not affect its structural integrity. A remarkable and rare piece, this Weissgerber vihuela is both a historical treasure and a testament to the legacy of one of the greatest German luthiers.
