Michael Cadiz – 2024 "Romanillos" No. 115
Overview
Overview
Michael Cadiz is a Seattle, Washington, native who moved his workshop to Graz, Austria, in 2016. He built his first guitar at the age of 15. He feels profoundly grateful for Robert Ruck, who invited him to stay for a while in his workshop to share his philosophy and approach to guitar building and from whom he learned a lot. Furthermore, he also received tremendous support from the Seattle builders Rick Davis and Greg Oxrieder. In 2016, he moved his workshop to Graz, Austria, where he has successfully built guitars ever since.
Inspired by the traditional sounds of Antonio de Torres and the unmistakable aesthetic of José Romanillos, this guitar model draws its design specifics from the 1888 SE114, once owned by Francisco Tarrega. It features the deep F to F# body resonance typical of this historic blueprint, producing a sound characterized by dark and velvety warmth, direct presence, and a responsive range of tonal colors. Over the years, Michael has crafted variations of this model with minimal changes, preserving its core design elements. Recently, however, he has slightly enlarged the plantilla and deepened the body of the instrument, aligning it more closely in size with those of Romanillos or Hauser, enhancing its volumetric presence without compromising the classic Torres feel.
This guitar is traditionally constructed with a top-tier spruce soundboard and Indian rosewood for the back and sides, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship. The trebles produced by this guitar are particularly striking, showcasing Michael’s mastery in achieving the often elusive perfect treble response. Additionally, the guitar's primary body resonance at F# enhances the clarity and airiness of the basses, beautifully complementing the overall sonic profile of the instrument. The subtle variations in sound color and the timeless quality of its timbre position this guitar at the pinnacle of contemporary lutherie, making it a favored choice for discerning musicians seeking a blend of traditional resonance and modern build quality.
