Masaki Sakurai - Concert-J Left-Hand Spruce 63 cm

Masaki Sakurai - Concert-J Left-Hand Spruce 63 cm

Overview

Masaki Sakurai, the nephew of the great Japanese luthier Masaru Kohno, was born in 1944. He studied electrical engineering at Sophia University and joined “Kohno Guitar Manufacturing” after graduating in 1967. In 1988 he won the prestigious first prize at the Fourth International Paris Guitar Making Competition. Masaki Sakurai’s guitars have impeccable craftsmanship and are known for their ease of playing and great volume.

The "Concert J" model stands out within the Sakurai-Kohno lineage, not only for its unique symmetrical bridge—a feature exclusive to this model—but also for its exquisite Madagascar rosewood back and sides that catch the eye. Crafted by Masaki Sakurai, this guitar honors the legacy and craftsmanship techniques of his uncle, Masaru Kohno, mirroring the qualities of the Model 30 from the early 1970s. However, Sakurai introduces a modern twist with a shorter 630 mm scale length, diverging from the traditional 664 mm scale models. This modification renders the instrument more accessible, especially benefiting guitarists with shorter fingers, without compromising the classic aesthetic and sound that the Kohno name is known for.

Embodying the pinnacle of Japanese craftsmanship, the Masaki Sakurai "Concert J" guitar is a testament to the meticulous selection of materials and an undying passion for detail. The guitar's lightweight nature and its sonorous qualities make it a pleasure to play. Notably, the trebles stand out for their clarity and delicateness, offering an even sustain across the fretboard that is both captivating and rare. Despite being a new instrument, it already exhibits an open and balanced sound signature, a hallmark of Kohno instruments. This characteristic, combined with its aesthetic beauty and ergonomic design, makes the "Concert J" a highly sought-after model for both its playability and its sonic excellence.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
