Overview

About the luthier

Masaki Sakurai, nephew of the legendary Japanese luthier Masaru Kohno, was born in 1944. After earning a degree in electrical engineering from Sophia University, he joined the Kohno Guitar Manufacturing workshop in 1967. In 1988, he was awarded the prestigious first prize at the Fourth International Guitar Making Competition in Paris, confirming his place among the most respected luthiers in the world. Known for his precise craftsmanship and acoustically refined instruments, Sakurai has continued the Kohno legacy while establishing a signature style of his own, particularly appreciated for its ease of play and excellent projection.

About the guitar

This exceptional 2025 “PC” model (Paris Competition) is a direct descendant of the award-winning guitar that secured Sakurai first prize in Paris in 1988. It represents the culmination of decades of experience and refinement and stands out for its expressive power and elegant presence. The cedar top is finely grained and harmonizes beautifully with the dark, straight-grained Madagascar rosewood back and sides, producing a balanced tonal spectrum with strong basses, full mids, and rounded trebles. Its voice is clear, nuanced, and effortlessly projects, making it an ideal concert instrument.

What sets this particular instrument apart is its stunning aesthetic detail. The interplay of the rosette, purfling, bindings, and bridge mosaic reveals a carefully orchestrated visual language that speaks to Sakurai’s artistry and design sense. Each element—from the ornamented bridge to the subtly curved bindings—has been chosen not only for its elegance but also for how it contributes to the unified aesthetic of the whole. The headstock shape is a tasteful homage to both Robert Bouchet and Masaru Kohno. Altogether, this guitar is not only a superb musical instrument but a work of visual art.

Masaki Sakurai 2025 P.C. Cedar Classical Guitar Review

While this guitar is sold, these are ready for you

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
