Masaki Sakurai - 2025 - Concert J Spruce

Overview

About the luthier

Masaki Sakurai, a renowned Japanese guitar maker, is known for his exceptional craftsmanship and his contribution to the field of guitar making. He inherited his passion for guitar making from his uncle Masaru Kohno, who was one of the most respected guitar makers in Japan.

Sakurai started his career in the field of electrical engineering, but after graduating from Sophia University in 1967, he joined the family business “Kohno Guitar Manufacturing” to continue the legacy of his uncle. Over the years, he honed his skills and became a master of the craft.

In 1988, he won the prestigious first prize at the fourth international Paris Guitar Making Competition, which cemented his reputation as a world-class guitar maker. His guitars are highly sought after by musicians and collectors alike due to their impeccable craftsmanship and exceptional sound quality.

About the guitar

The Concert J is a stunning instrument, easily recognizable by its symmetrical bridge, a unique feature within the Sakurai-Kohno lineup, and by its exquisite Madagascar rosewood back and sides. Masaki Sakurai built this guitar in the same tradition and meticulous craftsmanship as his uncle, Masaru Kohno, resulting in an instrument very similar to the Model 30 from the early 1970s. However, unlike the earlier 664 mm scale models, this guitar features a comfortable 650 mm scale, making it far more accessible for most guitarists.

Built with the extreme precision of Japanese craftsmanship, this instrument is of the highest quality, featuring a beautiful selection of fine woods and an impeccable attention to detail. The lightweight build enhances its playability, while its singing trebles stand out with remarkable clarity, delicacy, and an even sustain across the entire fretboard. Despite being brand new, the guitar already possesses an open and well-balanced sound, a signature trait of all Kohno instruments. A true masterpiece of tone, craftsmanship, and playability, the Concert J is a perfect choice for those seeking a refined and accessible concert guitar.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
