Overview

About the luthier

Marco Maguolo was born in Mestre (Venice, Italy) in 1976. After attending technical schools, his passion for the guitar took over, and he started building his first guitar under the guidance of Maestro M. Novelli. Starting from the autumn of 2003, he devoted himself entirely to making classical guitars. On top of his classical guitar-making skills, Marco Maguolo attended a bow service and repair course at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano held by Maestro Pietro Cavalazzi, and a violin-making course at the Scuola di Liuteria di Pieve di Cento in Bologna under the guidance of Maestro Marcello Bellei. Since 2004, Marco Maguolo’s waiting list kept growing quickly, and his guitars, played in concerts worldwide, gained broad recognition for their tone qualities and projection.

About the guitar

The "Ekphrasis" model by Marco Maguolo, part of his renowned Ducale series, represents a deeply personal and philosophical project, developed to mark twenty years of his activity as a guitar maker. This unique instrument was presented as a limited edition at the Roma Expo Guitars 2025.

The inspiration for this project stems from Marco’s reflection on the meaning of his craft, a journey initiated after reading Vito Mancuso’s “A proposito del Senso della vita”. The Italian word “Senso” — encompassing meaning, sensation, and direction — became the key to his exploration. The result is an instrument that questions not only the purpose of building handcrafted guitars in the age of industrial production but also the deeper relationship between object, maker, and musician.

The "Ekphrasis" concept refers to the rhetorical exercise of describing a work of art, developing thoughts and narratives around it. Maguolo sees the guitar as a witness of human reality, carrying within it the experiences, aesthetic taste, knowledge, and even the mistakes of its maker. Each handcrafted instrument thus becomes a story, a reflection, and a container of cultural and personal significance.

To embody this idea, Maguolo incorporated several symbolic elements into the guitar's design. Most notably, the full text of John Keats’ poem “Ode on a Grecian Urn” has been printed and placed inside the guitar. Hidden between the braces at the bottom of the soundbox, the poem is not meant to be easily readable — its difficult placement and minuscule font reflect the limitations of space and the philosophical idea of essence existing beyond direct perception.

Alongside the poem, another scroll contains a series of reflective questions, inviting the observer to consider the instrument beyond its physical function:

- What are you looking for?

- What are you looking at?

- Is it an empty space or a container?

- Is it just an artifact or also a witness?

- What meaning do you see beyond the sound you hear?

- How does this wood sing in its new life?

- Like an ancient Greek urn, what stories will it pass on?

- What is the meaning of this human work?

These questions are designed to spark a personal dialogue between the observer and the guitar, encouraging a deeper experience of the object as a work of art and not merely a tool for producing music.

From a luthier’s perspective, the "Ekphrasis" model maintains the traditional qualities of a classical guitar, with masterful craftsmanship and attention to acoustic performance. The soundboard, made using a special antiquing process derived from techniques used in string instruments, gives the wood a beautifully aged appearance while preserving a sparkling brilliance. The overall sound is defined by rich harmonic complexity, with silky, woody notes that give the guitar a serious and solemn character.

The rosette design echoes the concept of structure and reflection, while other details, such as the layout of the interior elements, further support the theme of artistic installation.

While this one is sold, these are ready for you

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
