Marco Bortolozzo embarked on his lutherie journey soon after completing his studies in industrial design. What began as a fascination with handcrafted guitars quickly evolved into a professional vocation. His technical background is clearly evident in the meticulous precision of his workmanship and in his dedication to understanding the methods of historical luthiers. Based in Milan, a city renowned for both its architectural heritage and design innovation, Marco blends tradition and contemporary aesthetics with remarkable coherence.
About the guitar
This 2025 instrument, numbered 117, reflects Marco Bortolozzo’s deep engagement with both historical guitar-making and modern design. Structurally, it draws inspiration from the famed 1937 Hermann Hauser played by Andrés Segovia. The guitar features double sides and a discreet wooden tornavoz, which together contribute to a refined and subtly enhanced tonal response.
Visually, this model bears Marco’s distinct design language. The clean lines, modern edges, and geometric forms, particularly noticeable in the headstock and decorative elements, speak to his training in industrial design. These are tastefully juxtaposed with classical motifs derived from Milanese architectural traditions. A special visual highlight is the rosette, which echoes Vicente Arias’s celebrated interlocking-circle design, executed here with exceptional clarity and craftsmanship. Another unique detail is the heel cap inlay, a personal nod to his friend and fellow craftsman Richard Reynoso, whose influence is subtly and respectfully incorporated into the overall aesthetic.
Its striking appearance is perfectly matched by its sound and playability. The lightweight, thoughtfully designed construction produces a powerful, explosive tone with deep, resonant basses and clear, singing trebles. The guitar responds instantly and directly, making right-hand playing particularly effortless and precise. At the same time, every note carries a remarkable solidity, reminiscent of the lighter guitars crafted by Hauser.
Marco has carefully tuned the soundboard to maximize sustain while subtly controlling the overtones, allowing the player to shape a wide range of tonal colors and dynamics. The extremely thin double sides add further strength to the guitar, enhancing the low-end depth and providing extra clarity and brilliance in the trebles.
Thanks to the smoothly contoured neck and its immediate responsiveness, the guitar plays comfortably with both hands. This exceptional instrument blends traditional construction principles with a unique and tasteful aesthetic.
