José Ramirez - 1976 1a No. 9525

Overview

About the luthier

The Ramírez family has been a cornerstone of classical guitar making since 1882. Their instruments have been played by legendary artists such as Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream, Laurindo Almeida, Oscar Ghiglia, and José Luis González. José Ramírez I (1858–1923) founded the original Madrid workshop, training many of the great builders of the 20th century. His grandson, José Ramírez III (1922–1995), introduced key innovations including the use of cedar soundboards and double sides made of rosewood and cypress, changes that shaped the modern concert guitar. Instruments built during his tenure, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s, are highly regarded for their powerful sound and exceptional craftsmanship.

About the guitar

This José Ramírez 1a, number 9525, was built in 1976 and represents the golden era of the Ramírez workshop under José Ramírez III. The number 19 stamped under the soundboard identifies Julian Moraga Rodríguez as the luthier who crafted this instrument.

It showcases all the hallmark features of a classic Ramírez 1a: a powerful, warm tone with excellent projection and precise note separation. The response is immediate, and the guitar offers a beautifully balanced voice across all registers. This is not only a top-level concert instrument but also a significant historical piece from one of the world’s most influential guitar makers.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
