About the luthier
Jialan Chen has been building classical guitars since 2013, beginning his career with Torres-style models before expanding in 2018 with his Bouchet and “Impressionism” designs. His work is rooted in a deep understanding of music and performance, resulting in instruments that reflect refined sound aesthetics and remarkable craftsmanship. A pivotal moment in his development came in 2014 during his time in Italy, where he studied with Andrea Tacchi and Paolo Coriani, gaining direct exposure to the techniques of some of Europe’s most respected luthiers.
In addition to these formative experiences, Chen has extensively documented historical guitars across Europe, enriching his technical vocabulary and artistic vision. Today, his guitars are admired worldwide for their tonal clarity, elegant construction, and artistic detail. Notably, Swedish guitarist Per-Olov Kindgren has performed with Chen’s Bouchet model since 2018. His instruments are sought after for their sophisticated materials, intelligent design, and consistently high acoustic performance.
About the guitar
The 2025 Impressionism model by Jialan Chen is a concert instrument of exceptional refinement. It features a spruce soundboard supported by a five-fan bracing system, chosen to enhance resonance while preserving structural responsiveness. The result is a rich, clear, and articulate voice with superb sustain and tonal integrity across the full register. The guitar responds evenly and with immediacy, making it an expressive tool for both intimate works and large-scale repertoire.
The back and sides are made of Wenge, a dense and visually distinctive hardwood that contributes depth, clarity, and projection to the sound. Its acoustic properties complement the spruce top with a solid low-end response and refined harmonic content, offering excellent note separation and sustain. The striking dark grain of the Wenge also adds a strong visual identity to the instrument, in keeping with the model’s artistic character.
Weighing 1745 grams, this guitar maintains excellent balance and playability. The neck shape and setup have been optimized for effortless left-hand movement, and the French polish finish ensures the woods remain vibrant and alive. With Alessi tuners, Knobloch EDC 34.0 strings, and a carefully voiced body resonance around G/G#, the 2025 Impressionism model is a compelling choice for guitarist seeking a deeply expressive, beautifully crafted concert guitar for both professional musicians and ambitious enthusiasts.
