Hermann Hauser® I - 1925 62 cm

Hermann Hauser® I - 1925 62 cm

Overview

Hermann Hauser® I is one of the most famous luthiers of classical guitar history. His guitar made for Andrés Segovia in 1937 is seen as one of the best guitars ever made and was described by the Spanish virtuoso as “greatest guitar of our epoch”. Later played by Julian Bream and the Abreu brothers among many other emblematic guitarists of all generations, Hermann Hauser ® I guitars are amongst the most sought after and collectible guitars.

Hermann Hauser® I took over the instrument workshop of his father Josef, while the latter was still in charge of the music publishing house, specialised in building lutes and guitars, but also remained faithful to zither building. Within the context of the guitarist movement in Bavaria, Hermann Hauser® I built a large number of different guitars, especially the Viennese models and the Munich models in all kinds of forms, but all in absolute perfection. His tierce-, prim- and the very rare quint-bass guitars, are of the highest quality. The sound of these instruments is still unsurpassed today. Out of his special virtuosity, Hermann Hauser ® I developed technical, patented innovations in the construction of the guitar soundboards and the body-neck connections. The Spanish virtuosos Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia became aware of Hermann Hauser® I's guitar building skills at the beginning of the 20th century.

This guitar is a graceful example of Hermann Hauser® I's outstanding skills in Viennese guitar making. It was crafted in 1925 and is a rare Vienna model with a slightly shorter scale length, 62 cm, and a narrower nut of only 46.5 mm. It was probably custom-made for a guitarist with smaller hands, and the playability is accordingly satisfactory. Despite its smaller body, this one-hundred-year-old guitar has a comparatively assertive, clear voice and transparency. Furthermore, the few cracks in the top have been expertly restored and the entire guitar refurbished, so that it is now in superb condition. It is an inspiring and ready-to-play guitar, with a lot of charm that will delight both active players and collectors in search of authentic "Viennese models" alike.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
