About the luthier
This exciting guitar was built by the Swedish luthier Heikki Rousu. Heikki has been building guitars since 1990 and has now crafted more than 300 instruments. This particular instrument is an eleven-string guitar, also known as the alto or Bolin. The Swedish luthier Georg Bolin developed this extended-range classical guitar in the 1960s, and it has been primarily popularized by guitarists Per-Olof Johnson and Göran Söllscher.
About the guitar
The Heikki Rousu No. 477, built in 2025, is a 10-string guitar inspired by the traditional 11-string Torres-style guitars. Designed for players seeking expanded range and tonal possibilities, this model combines classic inspiration with modern craftsmanship.
The guitar features six strings on the fingerboard, while the additional four bass strings offer flexible tuning configurations. The default tuning for the extended basses is:
- 7th string: D (using a standard 6th string)
- 8th string: C (using the 7th string from a 10-string set)
- 9th string: B (using the 8th string from a 10-string set)
- 10th string: A (using the 9th string from a 10-string set)
This tuning setup allows for deep, resonant basses, ideal for baroque, romantic, and contemporary repertoire that benefits from additional harmonic and pedal tones.
The guitar is equipped with Wittner mechanical pegs, which ensure precise and stable tuning with the aesthetic appeal of traditional wooden pegs.
Constructed with a spruce soundboard and bocote back and sides, the instrument delivers a rich, warm tone with excellent clarity and projection.
