Overview

About the luthier

Gernot Wagner is a renowned German luthier based in Frankfurt, widely regarded as a pioneer of double-top guitar construction. In collaboration with Matthias Dammann in the late 1980s, Wagner developed the revolutionary double-top soundboard design, incorporating a Nomex honeycomb core between two thin layers of wood. This groundbreaking innovation produced guitars that were lighter, more stable, and offered increased volume, sustain, and tonal depth. His instruments are celebrated for their flawless craftsmanship and refined aesthetics, featuring signature elements such as intricately crafted rosettes, headstocks inspired by Manuel Ramírez, and premium exotic woods for the back and sides. Wagner’s guitars are played by world-class classical guitarists like Jason Vieaux, Duo Melis, and Bill Kanengiser, who praise their tonal richness and impressive projection. Beyond his exceptional craftsmanship, Wagner actively shares his knowledge through educational initiatives, making him a significant figure in contemporary classical guitar making.

About the guitar

This extraordinary 1992 guitar predates Wagner’s double-top innovations yet reflects his ongoing dedication to pushing the boundaries of guitar-making. Featuring a finely grained spruce top with elegant hues and subtle natural patterns, this instrument showcases Wagner’s commitment to detail and aesthetic beauty. The top is adorned with a delicate rosette, intricate purfling, and bindings crafted from exquisite snakewood, all highlighting his meticulous craftsmanship. Supporting the soundboard is an 8x8 lattice bracing system, enhanced by two small braces designed to refine the voicing of the top for enhanced tonal response.

The body is completed with stunning back and sides made of Madagascar rosewood, featuring exceptional grain patterns that enhance both the visual beauty and the tonal depth of the instrument. Acoustically, this guitar delivers a traditional sound characterized by excellent balance, long sustain, and the ability to produce a wide variety of tonal colors. Its responsiveness makes it easy to bring out nuanced dynamics, while its capacity for volume ensures strong projection, making it suitable for both solo and ensemble performances.

The instrument is in excellent condition, displaying only normal signs of wear. A professionally repaired crack on the bass side of the lower bout of the back has been stabilized and does not affect the guitar’s performance or structural integrity.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
