Gary Southwell - 2024 No. 375

Overview

About the luthier

Gary Southwell’s journey as a luthier began with a deep love for music, inspired by icons like Paul Simon, Julian Bream, and John Williams, all of whom he later had the honor of crafting guitars for. His early exposure to classical guitar led him to study at the London College of Furniture, where he refined his skills in guitar making. In 1983, he established his workshop in Nottingham, specializing in historical guitars, particularly those from the early 19th century. Southwell’s dedication to reviving forgotten techniques and instruments, alongside his innovative designs like the A Series and Temperate Guitars, has positioned him as a leader in the field. His use of sustainable materials, such as Bog Oak, has inspired other makers, and his meticulous craftsmanship is highly regarded by guitarists seeking expressive, one-of-a-kind instruments. With a hands-on understanding of the player-instrument relationship, Southwell’s guitars are celebrated for their responsiveness, tonal depth, and innovation.

About the guitar

This guitar from 2024, bearing serial number 375, is inspired by an instrument crafted by renowned German luthiers in the 1940s—one famously played and recorded by Julian Bream toward the end of his international performing career. Gary Southwell worked closely with Bream in developing this model.

It features an exceptionally lightweight build, with a finely crafted spruce top and Indian rosewood back and sides. Thanks to its low body resonance, the basses develop with impressive openness and freedom, while maintaining clarity and focus. The sound remains precise and controlled across the entire fingerboard.

Particularly striking are the rounded, precise trebles, which blend beautifully with the midrange and bass frequencies. The result is a balanced sound with outstanding note separation, yet one that remains warm and full-bodied. This instrument offers a wide range of tonal colors and responds with great sensitivity to various playing techniques.

Although pre-loved, the guitar is in mint condition, showing virtually no signs of use.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
