Overview

About the luthier

François Leonard has been building classical guitars for nearly two decades in his workshop in Lorient, France. His approach to luthiery is deeply informed by formative experiences with English makers and time spent at the Lakewood workshop in Germany. Mentorship from Dominique Field further shaped his aesthetic and structural sensibilities, which are strongly influenced by the French school of guitar making. Leonard’s instruments reflect a refined balance of clarity, warmth, and precision, inspired by the legacy of French masters such as Daniel Friederich and Dominique Field.

About the guitar

Guitar No. 104 from 2025 once again confirms François Leonard’s ability to deliver instruments of superb tonal balance and depth. Built with a cedar top and Madagascar rosewood back and sides, this lattice-braced guitar offers a complete sound that is both rich and articulate. The basses are warm and profound, while the trebles are open and airy, retaining brilliance without ever sounding harsh. What truly distinguishes this instrument is its remarkable sustain, which enhances phrasing and legato playing. With its 640 mm scale and elegant French polish finish, this guitar is an ideal choice for players seeking a responsive and nuanced concert instrument in a more compact format.

  • Classical Guitars

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
