Dennis Tolz is one of the leading figures in modern German guitar making. Based in Kiel, he has gained international recognition for his innovative double-top instruments that combine advanced construction techniques with a strong foundation in traditional lutherie. His approach was strongly influenced by the renowned luthier Gernot Wagner, from whom he adopted the Nomex double-top concept and refined it with his own aesthetic and acoustic sensibility.
What sets Tolz apart is his ability to blend the clarity and power of modern guitars with the expressive color and lyrical warmth associated with traditional instruments. He consistently achieves this through a meticulous approach to material selection, resonance tuning, and structural refinement. About the guitar
This 2025 Dennis Tolz guitar, No. 73, is a superb example of contemporary concert guitar making. It features a Nomex double-top with an outer layer of spruce and an inner layer of cedar, supported by a lightweight fan bracing system. This combination gives the guitar a powerful, clear, and colorful voice, with excellent separation and projection across the entire dynamic range.
The back and sides are made of Indian rosewood, a tonewood known for its richness and sustain. Internally, the sides are doubled with cypress to enhance both the structural stability and the acoustic projection of the instrument. The soundboard is finished with traditional shellac French polish to preserve its resonance and responsiveness, while the back and sides are coated with a polyurethane finish to ensure durability and low maintenance over time.
One of the innovative features of this guitar is the WaveGuide, a small carbon fibre tornavoz placed inside the soundhole. This element is designed to lower the air resonance frequency below the low E (approximately 82 Hz), enriching the fundamental character of the tone and contributing to the instrument's strong, focused bass response.
The neck profile and setup have been designed with performance comfort in mind, offering an effortless playing experience for long sessions. With its refined sound, ergonomic design, and intelligent internal architecture, this new Tolz guitar exemplifies the high level of artistry and acoustic engineering that defines his work.
