Overview

About the luthier

Presented here is a concert guitar crafted by Daryl Perry, a highly regarded luthier based in Winnipeg, Canada. Since the early 1980s, Perry has devoted his career to classical guitar making, and he is now widely recognized as one of Canada’s foremost guitar builders. His instruments are known for their expressive tone and refined construction, favored by leading performers such as Marcin Dylla.

Perry draws deep inspiration from the great luthiers of the 19th and 20th centuries, combining traditional methods with a sensitivity to the character of each individual piece of wood. Working primarily with hand tools, he creates guitars that reflect both technical mastery and a profound understanding of sound. Each instrument is crafted with artistic purpose, balancing beauty, structure, and resonance.

About the guitar

The 2011 Daryl Perry No. 166 is an elegant and responsive concert guitar built in the traditional style. The finely graduated spruce top is paired with Indian rosewood back and sides, yielding a sound that is clear, balanced, and full of character. Visually, the instrument is understated and refined, with a subtle French polish finish that highlights the natural grain of the woods.

This guitar projects a lyrical, articulate voice. The trebles are luminous and controlled, offering excellent clarity, while the basses resonate warmly with definition and depth. The overall balance of tone and dynamic response makes it particularly suited to solo repertoire requiring precision and expressive nuance. Weighing just 1490 grams, it feels light and responsive in the hands, inviting musical detail and subtle phrasing.

Fitted with Rodgers tuners and Knobloch EDC 34.0 strings, this guitar is a prime example of Perry’s lutherie: deeply traditional, thoughtfully designed, and artistically voiced.

Condition

This instrument is in very good condition with normal wear from regular use. A professionally repaired crack on the lower left bout has been reinforced with carefully placed cleats and is now stable and structurally secure. The rest of the guitar shows moderate cosmetic wear consistent with respectful concert use, and it remains in fully functional playing condition.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
