Chiara Frisio - 2024 - 8-course Renaissance Lute

Overview

About the luthier

Chiara Frisio is a Milanese luthier with strong roots in a family of musicians and artisans. Immediately after completing high school, she decided to follow her vocation and enrolled at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria di Milano. There, she studied under distinguished teachers such as Roberto de Miranda, Silvia Zanchi, Ivan Bruna, and Bob Van de Kerkchove, gaining a solid foundation in the craft. After graduating as Maestro Liutaio, she worked for several years with the respected Italian luthier Lorenzo Lippi, refining her skills and expanding her knowledge of mandolins, early music instruments, and classical guitars. Following the tradition of many luthiers of the past, she continues to build and study a wide range of instruments, guided by her principles of playability, precision in craftsmanship, beauty of sound, and refined aesthetics.

About the instrument

This 8-course lute, built in 2024, is based on an original 7-course model by Giovanni Hieber, dating to around 1580. The proportions of this design, featuring a rounded yet moderately sized body, offer a perfect balance between a rich, beautiful tone and comfort in playability and handling.

The soundboard is made of Val di Fiemme spruce, known for its exceptional acoustic properties. It features a delicately carved rosette, based on a historical Tieffenbrucker design. The top is finished with a ground coat of shellac, followed by a thin layer of linen oil, achieving a natural, warm appearance that highlights the wood's grain and protects it at the same time.

The ribs are made of stunning flamed American walnut, a very light and responsive wood, with ebony spacers. The bowl is finished with a traditional oil and amber varnish, bringing out the depth and character of the wood. The neck is also made from American walnut and finished with linen oil for a natural and smooth feel, same as the ebony fingerboard.

The scale length is 585 mm with a nut width of 63 mm. The lute is fitted with wooden pegs, Pyramid strings with PVF trebles and silver-wound basses. The main frets are made of gut, with the final frets crafted from ebony. The tuning is G, D, A, F, C, G, F, E. The lute comes in a tailor-made soft case.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
