About the luthier
Chai Di is a classical guitar maker based in Beijing, China, who began his journey into luthiery in 2007. By 2010, his focus turned toward lattice-braced guitars, particularly exploring new materials such as balsa wood and carbon fiber. Through careful study and innovative adaptation of the Australian lattice concept, he developed his own distinctive approach to guitar making. His work draws significant influence from Greg Smallman and Matthias Dammann, blending elements of both styles into a coherent and original design language.
Today, Chai Di is known for building instruments that combine structural innovation with musical refinement. His guitars are a testament to technical precision and tonal depth, reflecting over a decade of experimentation and dedication.
About the guitar
This 2025 model is a prime example of Chai Di's lattice concept, reminiscent of Australian traditions but with a personal touch. The guitar features a thin cedar top supported by a 9x9 balsa lattice, each strut reinforced with carbon fiber. The prominent internal frame, composed of wood and carbon fiber, offers structural support while contributing to the instrument’s projection and clarity.
The top is finished with a thin wax layer to preserve responsiveness, while the body is coated in polyurethane for improved durability and ease of maintenance. The result is a guitar with the signature power and sustain of lattice instruments, yet marked by a warm tonal character, likely reflecting the influence of Dammann’s approach to sound. Sustain is abundant, and the tone remains consistent and controlled across the entire register.
