Carsten Kobs - 2007 Ragusa Solidtop

Carsten Kobs - 2007 Ragusa Solidtop

Overview

About the luthier

Carsten Kobs is a highly regarded German luthier based in Hamburg, known for his pioneering work in double-top guitar construction. As one of the first German luthiers to embrace this innovative technique, he has significantly contributed to the development of modern classical guitar design. His instruments are celebrated for their lightness, responsiveness, and remarkable volume, qualities that have made them a preferred choice among world-class guitarists such as Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, and Aniello Desiderio. With an extensive waiting list, Kobs’ guitars are rarely available on the market, making each of his instruments a sought-after rarity.

About the guitar

This 2007 guitar represents an earlier phase in Kobs’ career, built with a solid cedar top rather than his later double-top designs. Despite this, the guitar exhibits an exceptionally fast response, outstanding projection, and a powerful yet refined voice. The guitar has a present, warm tone with long sustain. The tone and volume are maintained throughout the fretboard.

The back and sides are crafted from stunning Madagascar rosewood, featuring remarkable grain patterns that enhance both the visual beauty and tonal depth of the instrument. The meticulous French polish finish further allows the wood to vibrate freely, contributing to the instrument’s dynamic expressiveness. Equipped with high-quality Alessi tuners, this guitar offers smooth tuning and excellent playability.

The guitar is in excellent condition, showing only normal signs of playing wear. A small dent on the top near the bottom has been professionally filled with shellac and does not affect the instrument’s structural integrity or tonal performance.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
