Antonio Marin Montero - 1980 No. 252

Overview

About the luthier

Antonio Marín Montero was born in Granada in 1933. In 1957, he joined the workshop of master Pérez, and two years later, on his father's advice, he began working with Eduardo Ferrer. A pivotal moment in his career came in the 1970s, when he met the French luthier Robert Bouchet. The two craftsmen became close collaborators and built several guitars together. The dialogue between Marín Montero’s Spanish construction techniques and Bouchet’s distinctive bracing system proved deeply inspiring. Antonio Marín Montero continued to incorporate this “Bouchet” bracing concept into many of his instruments throughout his career. Today, he is regarded as one of the most respected and sought-after Spanish luthiers.

About the guitar

This elegant 1980 guitar is a wonderful example of Antonio Marín Montero’s refined style and tonal vision. The instrument features a spruce top and beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides, both contributing to a rich and nuanced sound. The response is quick and sensitive, and the sound has that unmistakable warmth and depth so characteristic of Marín Montero’s guitars.

Tonally, this guitar offers a singing quality in the trebles and a rounded, full-bodied bass response. The combination of traditional Spanish construction with the Bouchet-influenced bracing brings out great color contrast and clarity across the registers, making it a joy to play. It is a compelling instrument both for concert performance and for collectors who appreciate its heritage and craftsmanship.

Condition

The guitar is in very good condition. One crack on the back has been professionally repaired, and the top displays normal signs of playing wear consistent with its age. The structure and playability remain excellent.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
