Antonio Marchese - 2024 “Garcia” No. 108

Antonio Marchese - 2024 “Garcia” No. 108

Overview

Antonio Marchese, born in 1992 in Aosta, Italy, is a master luthier crafting classical guitars and restoring historical and contemporary plucked instruments. After training at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan, where he specialized in instrument construction and restoration, he refined his skills under Enrico Bottelli, focusing on Spanish tradition guitars. In 2019, he opened his workshop in Montafia, Piedmont, where he creates exceptional classical guitars and historical replicas, known for their tonal and aesthetic excellence, using techniques like hand-assembled wooden mosaics and shellac varnishing. Antonio also provides expert restoration services and, since 2020, has taught varnishing for plucked instruments at his alma mater, sharing his expertise with future luthiers.

This guitar, numbered 108 is the result of a meticulous study of three Garcia guitars and an early-period Simplicio, focusing not on replicating a single instrument but developing a construction method and sound concept inspired by these two great luthiers. The guitar features an 8-fan bracing system with two closing bars and no bridge plate, employing an asymmetrical design: narrower, taller braces on the treble side for enhanced brilliance and clarity, and wider, lower braces on the bass side for depth and resonance. The soundboard, made from a beautiful Val di Fiemme spruce, and averaging a delicate thickness of 1.8–1.6 mm, ensures exceptional sensitivity and responsiveness. The back and sides are crafted from exotic satinwood, while the fretboard is made from premium Gabon ebony. The careful design, select woods, and clever bracing, come together to produce a sound that is quick and vibrant, with deep, resonant basses and haunting trebles with a pure tone, flowing like clear water—offering a correct dose of brilliance, balance, and warmth. Notably, the paper used for the label dates back to the second half of the 18th century, adding a touch of historical charm to the instrument.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
