Overview

About the luthier

Aldo Illotta was born in 1970 in Borgosesia, Italy, where he currently lives and works. He graduated from the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan with a thesis on the guitars of the Guadagnini family of Turin, supervised by Lorenzo Girodo. Under the guidance of Tiziano Rizzi, he explored the historical reconstruction of 19th-century guitars. He later specialized in the restoration of plucked instruments with Gabriele Negri, building on detailed studies of historical guitars and mandolins. In parallel, he refined his approach to modern classical guitar construction through studies with Carlo Raspagni.

For eight years, he served as a workshop instructor for plucked instrument construction at the Civica Scuola di Liuteria in Milan, contributing both to the modern guitar-making program and the introductory courses. Alongside his restoration and reconstruction work on historical guitars and mandolins, he also builds modern classical and acoustic guitars, including smaller instruments designed especially for children.

In 2003, Aldo Illotta received the "Piemonte Eccellenza Artigiana" award from the Region of Piedmont for his excellence in the construction and restoration of musical instruments.

About the guitar

This REG 2025 Limited Edition guitar by Aldo Illotta features a top made from torrefied Italian spruce, heat-treated to enhance tonal maturity and response. The neck is crafted from Cedrela odorata, while the headplate is faced with ebony. The back and sides are made of cocobolo, and the bridge matches in the same wood.

The guitar is built with a lattice bracing system, aiming to deliver a highly projected sound while preserving a traditional tonal color. The unique rosette is made from small fragments of various fine tonewoods, repurposed from other instruments. This gives each guitar a truly one-of-a-kind aesthetic that reflects Aldo’s respect for materials and creative approach. The instrument is finished with French polish, applied entirely by hand, and equipped with Alessi tuners and Knobloch EDC 34.0 strings.

  • Classical Guitar

The classical guitar, with its soft nylon strings and characteristic timbre, has become a symbol of chamber music, Spanish tradition, and concert repertoire. Its modern form was shaped by Antonio de Torres in the 19th century, setting the standard for the body, fan bracing, and the 65-centimeter scale length that are still used today. Instruments in this category open up a rich palette from the refined Romantic miniatures of Tárrega to the majestic concertos of Rodrigo. Here you will find guitars that preserve historical continuity and at the same time inspire new interpretations.
