Johannes T’Kindt – Guitar Maker and Restorer

Johannes T’Kindt began his training at the International Luthiery School of Antwerp (ILSA) at the age of 16. Three years later, he graduated and went on to specialize in the restoration of musical instruments. During this time, he worked independently on various instruments and experimented with different building techniques and materials—often in his dormitory in Belgium, where his earliest projects took shape.

Apprenticeship with Master Stephen Hill

In 2016, Johannes T’Kindt apprenticed under master luthier Stephen Hill in La Herradura, Granada. This transformative experience deeply influenced his craftsmanship and artistic approach. A year later, he returned to continue working and learning with Hill. It was during this period that the idea of establishing his own workshop in Spain first emerged.

Establishing His Own Workshop in Spain

In October 2017, shortly after receiving his diploma in instrument restoration, Johannes T’Kindt relocated to Andalusia with all his tools and equipment to open his own workshop in Dúrcal, Granada. About a year later, he moved to the nearby village of Nigüelas, where he built a new workshop, officially inaugurated in June 2019.

A Modern Approach to the Spanish Guitar-Making Tradition

Like many master luthiers, Johannes T’Kindt follows the traditional method of Antonio de Torres in crafting classical and flamenco guitars entirely by hand. With deep respect for Spanish luthiery, he combines time-honored craftsmanship with modern sensibility, creating guitars that are both tonally distinctive and aesthetically refined.

His passion for historical instruments has led him to build a replica of a Luis Panormo guitar and to restore several valuable vintage instruments. In addition to classical guitars, Johannes has also crafted acoustic basses, electric guitars, and various percussion instruments, showcasing his broad skill set and innovative spirit.
