Johan Sarens – Guitar Maker

Johan Sarens grew up in an environment shaped by music, performance, and creativity. His father is a guitarist and his grandfather was a lute maker, a family tradition that set the course for his path into lutherie at an early age.

He first studied jazz guitar at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and later guitar making at the CMB (Centrum voor Muziekinstrumentenbouw) in Puurs, Belgium. As a trained guitarist and luthier, he understands all the tonal and technical demands of the instrument from both sides.

Since 2021, Johan has been teaching the art of classical guitar making at CMB. He specializes in classical and flamenco guitars, working in the tradition of the Spanish masters. He deliberately limits the use of machines and builds all tone-critical parts by hand. All of his instruments are finished with a traditional French polish (shellac).

In recognition of his exceptional craftsmanship and his dedication to sharing knowledge about guitar making, he received the “Gouden Bootschaaf 2017” (Golden Finger Plane), an award honoring outstanding instrument makers.
