Curt Claus Voigt is a highly respected German luthier who continues the long-standing family tradition of Voigt instrument making. From his workshop in Edling near Wasserburg am Inn in Bavaria, he crafts classical concert guitars known for their precise craftsmanship, rich tonal depth, and perfect harmony between tradition and innovation. Musicians and collectors worldwide appreciate his instruments for their expressive character, playability, and artisan quality.
Craftsmanship Rooted in History
The Voigt family's roots in instrument making date back to 1690. Since then, nine generations have built plucked and bowed instruments in Markneukirchen, the historic center of German luthiery. Curt Claus Voigt represents the ninth generation and stands for a synthesis of historical knowledge and contemporary tonal aesthetics.
He began his training at a traditional Markneukirchen workshop producing various types of guitars—from classical to jazz and electric models. His education was enriched by his father Günter and grandfather Kurt Voigt, as well as by master violin and guitar makers. Additional inspiration came from studying historic Spanish guitars and their construction methods.
Tonal Character and Construction
Curt Claus Voigt’s guitars are known for:
Balanced, resonant tone with singing trebles and warm basses
Responsive dynamics and refined articulation
Carefully selected tonewoods, including spruce, cedar, rosewood, and maple
Elegant French polish finish for optimal resonance and visual appeal
Clarity and power across all registers
A prime example is his model "Espressivo" – a guitar featuring a domed soundboard, lattice bracing, sound port, and ergonomic design. It embodies Voigt’s philosophy of combining traditional concert guitar construction with the needs of the modern guitarist.
Restorer and Historian of Plucked Instruments
Beyond building new instruments, Curt Claus Voigt is also an expert restorer of historical plucked instruments. Museums, collectors, and musicians trust his meticulous restoration work. His deep knowledge of historical construction techniques is evident in every instrument he builds today, infusing each guitar with the soul of past centuries.
A Family Legacy Continues
The Voigt tradition is already being carried forward by his son Marc-Julian Voigt, who was trained by Curt Claus Voigt and has brought fresh momentum to the workshop since 2009. With additional experience in French lute making, he combines modern ideas with the rich heritage of the Voigt family.
